NEIGHBORLY PLANTINGS AND A PEAK INTO MY LIVING ROOM

I was delighted when my neighbors asked me to revamp their front foundation shrub border last month.  They purchased this house several years ago, inheriting the contractor-esque plantings installed when it was built.

Here’s what the front border looked like for quite a few years.

This is what it looks like now!  It’s an easy care planting that will produce splashes of flowering color, perfect for these occupants’ getaway retreat from NYC’s hustle and bustle.

Yes, it looks a bit “fresh cut out of the barber shop”, but the newly planted material will relax, fill out and naturalize within a season or so.
Isn’t this Carex ‘everillo’ absolutely gorgeous?  It’s electric!

Okay, now let’s walk back over to my yard.
I snapped this photo of the walkway to my back yard last week.  I think that despite it being early autumn, things here still look fresh and tidy.

My home’s front entry doesn’t lend itself to creating that wow factor.  It can easily looked cluttered and out of balance if I’m not careful and selective; however, I do what I can to make it inviting.  I like to keep select summer annuals for as long as possible, as many reawaken and brilliantly bloom when the chilly evenings roll in.  I don’t exactly decorate for Halloween.  Instead, I slowly phase out the summery things and phase in a look that will carry me through late fall.

Okay, let’s take a quick peak inside.  I placed some “suggestive autumn-esque” things about.  Again, not Halloween, but subtle, yet playful seasonal accents.   I must apologize in advance with regard to the color quality and such.  The interior of my home is very difficult to photograph; it’s either too dark in the morning or too washed out from the sunlight in the afternoon.
This is my front door tussie-mussie.

Here’s my rope wreath…. chillin’ with St. Joseph.

See…. the look is warm, friendly and transitional.  And a little kitschy 🙂

Don’t mind the withering floral bouquet.

Okay, so maybe this hand evokes a bit of Halloween creepiness.  Long ago I dated a gentleman that made creepy fired clay creations.  This is what’s left of him.

Here’s one of my old windows that I repurposed.

And here’s my cat, who will turn sixteen years old one month from now.  Isn’t he handsome?  I think so.

I hope you enjoyed hanging out in my neighbor’s front yard, in my living room……. and think my cat is handsome!

A CLUTCH OF INSPIRATION

It’s certainly still heavy coat season in the northeast, but before we know it, crocus flowers will be poking up through the ground, forsythia flower buds will be plumping up, springtime props will accent our abodes……..and eggs will be laid.  Yes, they will be laid atop mantles, in hutches, under cloches, within tabletop centerpieces, and will magically find their way into the most curious of places in our homes.

Today I thought I’d lay a little visual clutch of inspiration for you in the hopes that it may hatch a few ideas in your head.

Who says that you can’t clutch eggs in a chum pot?  Oh, yes you can…..

….and, in mop wringers……..

……..and scale trays.

linda nelson at the createaerie

Clutch them in deep fryer baskets…….

and in coffee pots…….

linda nelson at the createaerie

Stash them inside tomato mashers and cigar boxes……….

and nestle them within your favorite fashion accessory, too.

Trust me, no one will cackle at you.

Besides, mama always said to never put all of your eggs in one basket.  She was right.

LITTLE SPLASHES CHRISTMAS

Because my dining room and living room have served as crafting lab and production station for the past two months, and is currently a weekend open-to-the-public handmade holiday shop, I’ve held off on decorating those rooms.  It’s a bit unnerving, as they are usually draped with my beloved baubles by now. However, I’ve managed to adorn my kitchen with curious little splashes of Christmas.  The flavor for this season is homey, vintage, general store-esque…… with a pinch of kitsch.  It’s subtle, but I’m finding it quite delightful.

Aren’t these Twelve Days of Christmas cloth napkins just darling?  A client of mine passed them on to me.  They’re just too pretty to smear a holiday feast upon; I think they’d make for a fabulous banner, though!

I had just enough vintage glass baubles to fill this scale tray with, and especially love the look paired with the colorful candy canes.

Not a creature was stirring……….  This sweet little felted mouse, a gift from a friend, quietly perches on my kitchen window.  Washing dishes won’t have to be a lonely task.

I love decorating for Christmas, don’t you?

WHAT COLOR(S) WILL YOUR THANKSGIVING BE?

I thought I’d share a collection of color swatches compiled from goings-on at the createaerie.  Perhaps they will evoke in you some Thanksgiving table setting or decorating ideas.  However, if you already have that all planned out, then maybe these images might entice you to treat yourself to a wardrobe accessory…….. or two…….or three.  Just let your color driven passions lead you.  The outcome will, indeed, be very lovely.

I find the subjects pictured below simply visually delicious.

I hope you do too.

Enjoy!
