CAN YOU GUESS……….

what these items have in common?

 No?  Then, I’ll tell you.

They’ve been transformed (except for one) into fabulous seaside beach cottage doorstops!

Okay, let’s start with the prankster.

Seriously, does it get easier or beachier than a simple rock?  Sure, you can paint it or transfer an image onto it; and, while that could jazz it up, it’s not even necessary.

Now, who doesn’t have a mason jar on hand?  I added some colored sand, shells and a piece of jute twine.  Done.

Weight down a straw tote with some rocks, add a hand towel and a magazine…….and this aDOORnment is in the bag!  Adding some flip-flops to this ensemble would look absolutely adorable.

I drew a little starfish outline onto some cork contact paper, slapped it onto a brick, then added a little crystal.  After all, a star has got to twinkle; even this one.

Scuff up a leftover nut tin, transfer or paint something onto the surface, stash some weighty pebbles inside, glue it shut, then add some rope.  Done.

Perhaps you have a tin like this lurking around in your garden shed.  Add those weighty pebbles, topped with some seashells, and that breeze isn’t taking your door anywhere.

I’m sure you’ve got a stockpile of fabric remnants in your craft room.  Sew yourself a simple pebble pouch, cinch it shut, then embellish as you wish.

There you have it – seven inspiring ideas for keeping your seaside beach cottage doors slam-free.

Now, feel the breeze, and get creative.

THRICE UPON A YELLOW WING

Last weekend I made a return visit to Wing Cottage, and assisted my friend in taking down her vegetable garden and various garden beds for the season.  The late October weather was glorious, some trees still clad in the celebratory hues of autumn.

Her vegetable garden harvest had proved bountiful throughout the summer, though upon my arrival this time around I was greeted with just these darling little diehard strawberry plants.  And the rooster.

Upon the plants being cut back, it was apparent that the decorative treasures tucked about would now take center stage and be the sole stars of the show.

The property is lined with a few bluebird houses, something I hadn’t taken notice of during my previous two stays at Wing.

My friend’s periodic archeological property gleaning has rewarded her with numerous curiosities and props to play around with and display.  She gifted me the bottles and jars, which I will add to my overabundant, yet never enough, collection of bud vases.

The pond on the property was the “it” spot for a harmonious choir of frogs and crickets during my visit back in August; though, by last weekend the performers had already packed up and left.  This time around the tune was rustling leaves, and though still music to my ears, proof that fall was in full gear.

However, my friend’s boyfriend apparently still hears frogs and crickets.

I bet Wing wears a blanket of snow well, peeking out like a little yellow box of sunshine.  I would love to find out.

WAKING UP IN A DREAM COTTAGE

©linda nelson 2014

I woke up this morning, not from, but in a dream, a dream cottage set about scenic rolling hills and clad with unpretentious perfection.

I sipped my morning coffee within this screened-in porch overlooking the scenic rolling hills, and sat upon a wicker settee, sharing one of many wonderful moments with a very special friend.  How did this happen?  Two blue ferns.  Yes, that’s right…… two blue ferns.

These are not just any blue ferns.  Not too long ago they lived at Plum Cottage in Bridgehampton, NY.  Shortly after, I fostered them while this yellow jewel box of a home was lovingly furnished; Hammertown has the inside scoop on that.  Now, they live at Wing Cottage in Clinton Corners, NY, and adorn that screened-in sweet spot.
