ALMOST SPRING

How delighted I was this morning to wake up to a snowflake-y view.  I love snow, and feel we didn’t get enough this winter here on Long Island, NY.  Snow triggers the cozy craftiness in me; I’d be happy with snowflakes falling all winter long.

Snowy days are ideal for curling up and napping……..

But, I chose to do something else.

I printed up some vintage seed packet images onto watercolor paper, then hunted my house for some props to display them on.

The simplest of crafting activities is often all it takes to make a seasonal decorative statement.

Let’s see what other signs of spring are making an appearance at the createaerie.

Perusing through books and magazines is also a wonderful snowy day activity.  This one is a gift I received from a friend who recently visited for a weekend.  I can never have enough gardening books.

The quince branches I cut for forcing have finally begun showing off.

And, that!………. concludes my snowy, not-yet-spring day.

IT’S A BREAD MAKING KIND OF DAY, CHARLIE BROWN.

Do you remember ordering Scholastic books from school as a child?  My sister and I looked forward to the monthly brochures our teachers would hand out.  We’d check off our wish list of books, mom would put the money and completed form in an envelope, and we’d deliver it back to our respective teachers.  Then….. we would wait, and wait…………………………. and wait.  It seemed like a lifetime before the shipment would come in and the books would be distributed to the students.  Both of my children delighted in ordering from Scholastic when they were young, and I hope the youngsters of today are enjoying it, too.

Well, this little book (one of my sister’s picks) has stood the test of time in our family, and all because of one memorable recipe – CHARLIE BROWN’S ALL-STAR WHITE BREAD.  It does not disappoint.  I promise.  Scout’s honor.

Check out this recipe’s cartoon.  How befitting as we ride out this blizzard, no?

Do give this recipe at try.  I assure you…….. you won’t be feeding it to the birds!

RELIVING THE DREAM AT WING COTTAGE

This past weekend I made a return visit to my friend’s dreamy Wing Cottage in New York’s Duchess County town, Clinton Corners.  It just gets better and better.  Her long time friend (both of them having had residences in the Hamptons, and currently, in Manhattan) was also there for a visit.   The concoction… the most delightful trio of female energy.  A love for farmhouses, rural landscapes, old books, home interiors, antiques, lazying around, great food, lovable lap dogs, and a screened in porch was the glue that bonded us for the weekend.

Local ventures included lunch at Pine Plains Platter, poking around in A New Leaf Used Books, and dining at Rhinecliff’s Chine Rose.  Take a peek at my post from the past to learn about additional sweet spots in the area.

Our stay concluded with an alfresco lunch – a tri tip steak grilled to perfection and a medley of homemade, farm to table salad dishes.  What farm, you ask?  Well, it’s the one nestled right within the rolling hills of my friend’s property.

This morning I’m back to reality, albeit refreshed, satisfied and still basking in the glow of my weekend visit to heaven on earth.

Do stay tuned…… you wouldn’t want to miss seeing Wing Cottage in autumn, would you?

ROAD READS: IS YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD ON THE SAME PAGE?

I just returned from a lovely visit to Pacific Palisades and Santa Monica, California, and stumbled upon these most intriguing little book houses placed about the neighborhood I was staying in.  Further research about these curiosities has made me want to jump onboard and become a part of this worldwide community.  With having just learned about the Little Free Library story, I feel like such a late bloomer, but that’s okay.  It’s a spring project I look forward to doing.  Check out the site and you may be motivated, too.
